The Bec Leather Story
At Bec Leather, our story begins with a love of the outdoors and a deep respect for leathercraft. What started as a simple passion has grown into a niche, homegrown leather company dedicated to creating products that are as unique as the landscapes of New Zealand itself.
Every piece we craft is handmade locally, with care, precision, and a touch of love. We source our leather ethically from feral pest species roaming the wilds of New Zealand — turning what is often seen as a challenge for our environment into something beautiful, useful, and sustainable.
We treasure the artistry of quality cut and prepared skins, a skill honed over years of dedication. Our commitment to excellence has been recognized with multiple NZBS Best Skin awards for our expertly prepared flat skins.
New Zealand’s wild spaces are full of pest species, and every year we harvest hundreds across the country. But we do more than just harvest — we honour the animal by using as much of it as possible, creating products that combine functionality, craftsmanship, and a story rooted in the land.
At Bec Leather, we don’t just make leather goods — we celebrate the journey from wild New Zealand outdoors → ethical harvest → handcrafted excellence. Every piece tells a story.
How We Hunt – Our Code of Ethics
Hunting, for us, is more than a pursuit—it’s a responsibility. Every animal we take is done so with care and respect, ensuring the process is as clean and humane as possible. We follow the strict regulations set by the Department of Conservation and the New Zealand Bowhunters Society, honoring the principle of fair chase.
This means we never take young animals still dependent on their mothers, and we avoid targeting those without a clear chance of escape. Patience and precision guide every shot, whether we are using a rifle or a bow. Each hunt is a test of skill, awareness, and respect for the life we take.
In the quiet moments before releasing an arrow or squeezing a trigger, we remind ourselves that ethical hunting is about balance—between nature, necessity, and the deep respect we owe the wild.
